This programme delves into the challenges and support available for care leavers in the UK as they transition into adulthood. Approximately 38,000 children enter care each year, with one child entering every 15 minutes. Many of these children remain in the care system until they reach adulthood, facing unique challenges as they navigate independence without the support of a traditional family.
The programme features insightful interviews with Jess and Callum, two former care leavers who candidly share their personal experiences navigating the complexities of leaving care. Their stories shed light on the common struggles faced by care leavers, including housing instability, financial difficulties, limited educational opportunities, and emotional wellbeing.
Kirsty Doull from CELCIS, a leading organisation in children’s care and protection, provides valuable insights into the current landscape and support systems available for care leavers. She discusses the challenges faced by care leavers and the importance of early intervention and comprehensive support to ensure a successful transition into adulthood.
Carrie Wilson-Harrop from the Care Leavers Association offers a unique perspective on the issues faced by care leavers and the advocacy work being done to address them. She highlights the need for increased awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by care leavers and the importance of advocating for their rights and wellbeing.
Clare Bracey from Become, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of care leavers, discusses the policy and systemic changes needed to ensure a brighter future for young people leaving care. She emphasises the importance of investing in early intervention, providing adequate funding for support services, and creating a more inclusive and supportive society for care leavers.
Together, the guests offer a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities facing care leavers, highlighting the importance of support, advocacy, and systemic change to ensure a successful transition into adulthood. The programme serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of care leavers and the need for continued efforts to improve their lives and outcomes.
